  • “Joseon Exorcist” Casts, Director, Writer Apologizes to the Public

“Joseon Exorcist” Casts, Director, Writer Apologizes to the Public

SBS permanently pulls the plug on “Joseon Exorcist,” casts, director, writer, and more apologizes to the public.

Jang Doon Yoon was among the cast members to release his personal apology for participating in the drama.

Co-stars Lee Yoo Bi and Park Sung Hoon conveyed their sincerest regrets through their IG accounts.

    Lee Yoo Bi’s statement follows:

Hello, this is Lee Yoo Bi.

I want to apologize for this incident that has made many people feel uncomfortable.

I hope you understand that I am writing this now because I wanted to make a post after the situation was settled. This drama was a project I met at a time when I had a lot of personal concerns.

I came across it when I was thinking about what roles to play in the future, wondering what I can do, and hoping to try new things and achieve them one by one.

I think I was greedy to portray a character that I haven’t tried out before.

I regret that I was ignorant of the distortion of history and did not think deeply.

From now on, I will try to become an actress who works with a wide perspective.

    Once again, I’m sorry.

Park Sung Hoon’s handwritten apology as follows:

Hello, this is actor Park Sung Hoon.

First of all, I feel a great sense of responsibility as an actor in “Joseon Exorcist” after reading all the posts by many people who scolded the drama and worried about it.

Despite the weight of portraying a real figure and a careful mindset of this matter, I was unable to properly judge the boundaries between creation and distortion. I was foolish to think that as an actor, all I had to do was act my part and do my best for the given character.

I am ashamed that I realized my stupidity only after it came to this situation. Therefore, I will accept all the criticism given to me. I belatedly realize the seriousness of the issue and how important historical awareness and social responsibility are for actors.

I’m sorry to have caused concern to many people. Through this opportunity, I will become an actor who acts responsibly in a cautious manner.

Once again, I sincerely apologize. I’m sorry.

Director and Screenwriter Conveys Their Apologies

    Director Shin Kyung Soo wrote:

This is Shin Kyung Soo, the director of “Joseon Exorcist.”

As the director in charge of all the final decisions, I feel deeply responsible for the recent controversies and would like to apologize to viewers.

I would also like to apologize for this statement being late because of the various situations that had to be resolved when the drama was canceled.

As the drama was set in the Joseon period and had characters that are real historical figures, I should have been more cautious about the details, the stories, and the expression of the characters’ stories.

I feel responsible for this and am in deep self-reflection. As the director, I am responsible for all the final decisions and choices related to the drama’s content. The cast and crew only followed my lead.

But I would like to state that I did not direct with any special bias or prejudiced historical perspective, as some viewers have criticized. All of the problematic scenes were because I was lacking as a director. For this, I apologize.

As the drama has now been canceled, I am infinitely sorry to the cast and crew, who have worked hard for the past year, and to the viewers.

Thank you to those who sent in their valuable feedback about the drama. I will not forget your recommendations and advice.

    Screenwriter Park Gye Ok wrote:

This is the writer of “Joseon Exorcist,” Park. Gye Ok.

I sincerely apologize for causing discomfort to viewers over the past few days because of a script I wrote without careful consideration.

As I was preparing for the drama, as the head screenwriter, I wanted to keep my past mistakes in mind and show my improvement through a good script. Instead, my complacency and lack of mature judgment resulted in the anger and exhaustion of viewers.

    Once again, I apologize.

I should have shown more respect to those heroes who established the Joseon dynasty and left a huge impact on our history.

Instead, I leaned on the fact that the drama was in the fantasy genre and deeply regret the complacent judgments I made as a result.

Many viewers have criticized and speculated about intentional historical distortion, but I have never intended such a thing. However, the results were that I left deep scars on others, so I will take this to heart and not forget this feeling.

I bow my head and apologize to the actors, production staff, and director who poured their heart and soul into making a good drama, as well as to the production company and the broadcasting station.

Once again, I apologize to all the viewers with all my heart.

Other members who expressed their regrets and apologized were Kim Dong Jun, Kam Woo Sung, Jung Hye Sung, Geum Sae Rok, and Seo Young Hee.

  • “Joseon Exorcist” star Jang Dong Yoon Releases Apology

“Joseon Exorcist” star Jang Dong Yoon Releases Apology

SBS permanently halts “Joseon Exorcist,”, actor Jang Dong Yoon releases his personal apology on choosing and appearing on the drama.

Upon its release earlier this week, “Joseon Exorcist” attracted many attention. It was considerably among the highly anticipated drama for its genre and distinctive plot.

    Distortion of Korean History?

However, the series shook everyone to a great extent as it primarily uses props and food clearly of Chinese origins. Furthermore, viewers did not hold back expressing their disappointment as it appears that the drama was misconstruing Korean history.

In just two episodes, “Joseon Exorcist” created an uproar that SBS tried to appease the public by apologizing. The viewers were adamant with contempt for the drama. It leaves the network with no other choice than to cancel it permanently.

    Public Apology

On March 27th, star and among the lead cast Jang Dong Yoon apologized to the public regarding the controversies surrounding the drama through his agency.

    His statement as follows:

Hello, this is actor Jang Dong Yoon. I worried a lot about [what to say]. I’m writing this in the hopes that, even if it is lacking, it will be an honest and sincere response to the many frustrated people who are waiting to hear my thoughts and stance as one of the leads of “Joseon Exorcist.”

First, there is no room for me to make excuses. I’m incredibly sorry. I failed to fully recognize that this drama would become so problematic. This is because I was ignorant and complacent. I only looked at the drama from the perspective of an actor acting out a creative work. I neglected my responsibility to look carefully [at the drama] from a societal perspective. It was a huge mistake.

Based solely on the fact that I would have the opportunity to work with a director I admire and amazing fellow actors, there was no reason for me to turn down this drama. Within my limited options, after taking a variety of factors into consideration, I believed that I had made the best choice [by selecting this drama]. As I said earlier, this, too, was because I was foolish.

Believing that people can live proudly if they lack moral flaws, I have always tried my best to be strict in keeping myself in line. But now that this kind of shameful and mortifying incident has happened related to my work, I’m filled with regret.

I’m deeply aware that it is because of the love and interest of the public that I am able to work [as an actor]. Therefore, even if you dismiss this [statement] as excuses, despite my intentions, I will humbly accept that. I didn’t want to make an emotional plea or write something invoking sympathy, but in the process of trying to sincerely express my feelings, I think this has become that kind of statement, so I apologize once again for that. However, if you generously look kindly on [my role in this matter], I’d like to engrave this incident in my heart and remember it forever while showing you good things as a more mature actor.

  • “Joseon Exorcist” Cancelled After Two Episodes

“Joseon Exorcist” Cancelled After Two Episodes

SBS announced their final decision to cancel “Joseon Exorcist” after only two episodes.

The reason behind the conclusion is due to the massive criticisms and allegedly historical distortions.

Yesterday, March 26th of 2021, the SBS network issued the official statement regarding the new drama within the week:

“We are informing you of SBS’s position on “Joseon Exorcist.”
As SBS deeply recognizes the severity of the current situation [regarding the drama], we have decided to terminate our broadcasting rights contract for “Joseon Exorcist” and cancel all broadcasts of the drama.

At the moment, SBS has already paid most of the fees for the broadcasting rights to the drama in question, and the production company has already completed 80 percent of filming.

Although we are concerned about the financial losses incurred by both the broadcast network and the production company, as well as the gap in our programming, SBS feels a heavy responsibility as a public broadcast network, and we are informing you that we have decided to cancel the program.”

Before the network’s unfortunate action, netizens and viewers threw judgment at the series after its premiere. Many reprimanded the use of food, props that are clearly of Chinese origin. As these prompting viewers to express their disappointment of how the Korean drama was intending to share history but was distorted.

From hearing the feed backs, SBS immediately delivered their apology along with explanations behind the drama. Nonetheless, the spectators continues to express their disdain while the show was ongoing. And soon after, many of the drama’s sponsors backed out one by one.

Thus, pushing the network to come up with the concluding verdict.

All contracts are now in the process of termination; this includes overseas copyrights connected to Joseon Exorcist. As a matter of fact, the network is pulling out all promotions associating to the drama.

Did you get the chance to watch the series? Do you think the reactions were valid and the network’s response?

  • BTS Faces Racism after MTV Unplugged Performance

BTS Faces Racism after MTV Unplugged Performance

The Bangtan Sonyeondan, more popularly known as BTS, is genuinely one of the biggest boy bands in the world today.

The seven men in the group, namely, RM, Seokjin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook’s rise to fame, is not without controversy and bouts of racist jabs.

On February 23, 2021, the group teamed with MTV and released a special MTV Unplugged edition from the “BE” album.

They showcased Telepathy, Blue & Grey, Dynamite, Life Went On and covered Coldplay’s “Fix You,” which delighted many fans of both groups throughout the world.

However, a German radio host throws racist commentaries about the group. With a disdainful criticism and remark of likening the group to a “virus that needs to have a vaccine soon.”

    https://twitter.com/BTS_UPDATES_GER/status/1365026507014479876

What rooted this hateful comment? Presenter Matthias Mautschik of Bayern 3 called it blasphemous that BTS had the gall to cover Coldplay’s “Fix You.” Additionally, stating the group needs to be punished and sent “to North Korea” and 20 years!

It is an unacceptable and irresponsible approach, especially with the global xenophobic and racist attacks on all Asians during these times.
The said individual then retracted his words and saying it was only a jest.

Would you say it’s an issue blown out of proportion? Or was the presenter really at fault?
